Buy online or pop in store to see Grant, Laura or Emma. We love to talk shop and love to hear all about your sewing machine or your latest sewing project. If you need help with that project you can book in for a lesson with Laura.
We are also the Mercury Sewing Machine Company and have been supplying industrial sewing machines to customers nationwide since 1983. We have changed our focus to mainly high quality and affordable domestic machines for home sewers - but still also sell electric cutting machines and gravity feed steam irons. We import directly so are able to offer to you at a very competitive price compared to other big name brands. Come and check them out!
So please, have a browse and see what you can find. If there's something we don't have that you desperately want please let us know - we will do our best to accommodate!

History of THE SEWING DEPOT and MERCURY SEWING MACHINE CO.
The Mercury Sewing Machine Company was first formed in Auckland in 1983 by Bruce Morgan and was originally known as Bruce Morgan Sewing Machines. A highly experienced sewing machine mechanic and salesperson, Bruce spent approximately 50 years in the industry. He visited manufacturers in China and Taiwan and selected the machines he felt best suited the New Zealand market.
During the 1980's Bruce began direct importing industrial sewing machines into New Zealand. In 2002 he introduced a domestic range of sewing machines to the company. It was also about this time that he started selling machines through Trade Me (under the name 'Bigbelly').
The company has now sold well over 2500 machines through Trade Me.
Current owner Grant Henderson took over from Bruce when he retired in 2010, renamed the company Mercury Sewing Machines and relocated the stock to Petone. Grant regularly visits the company's suppliers in China, visiting the factories and trade expos and talking with the manufacturers about new models and the direction of the industry.
In 2012 Grant opened the retail store The Sewing Depot on Buick Street in Petone, and Jen joined the team as Store Manager. They have since became an authorised stockist of Singer Sewing Machines and Brother Sewing Machines. The company is still a popular seller on Trade Me and now trades under the name 'The Sewing Depot'.
Grant and Jen have been joined by Laura and Emma and have expanded the store's range to include all manner of haberdashery, threads, embroidery, quilting, sewing and patternmaking supplies and are currently doing their best to get all of these products up on the website so you can shop from anywhere in the country at anytime.
